Navigating Dog Parenting Without Shame: Trusting Your Path

In today’s world, it feels like everyone is quick to judge. Cancel culture has permeated various aspects of life, and the world of dog parenting is no exception. Whether it’s training methods, feeding practices, or holistic care, pet parents often face criticism for their choices. It’s time to shift this mindset and embrace a more compassionate approach.

The Pressure to Follow Trends

Cancel culture doesn’t just exist in media—it’s present in the way we care for our dogs. For decades, trends in dog training have swung from one extreme to another. If you’re not keeping up, it’s easy to feel judged or guilty. But evolving in our approach doesn’t mean we should be shamed into it.

I’ve been involved in the dog world for over 30 years and have seen these trends come and go. Early in my journey, I was influenced by misguided advice on how to handle “dominant” behavior. I recall a painful experience with a rescue dog, Ben, where I followed a method that I now know was wrong. This experience taught me that while it’s important to evolve, it’s equally important to learn, adapt, and be gentle with ourselves during this journey.

Evolving Without Guilt

It’s natural for pet parents to change their approaches as they gain more knowledge. But evolving should not come from a place of guilt or fear. I want to stress that the healthiest way to grow with your dog is by learning, researching, and most importantly, following your intuition. Every dog is unique, and your relationship with your dog should guide your decisions, not the opinions of others.

The Raw Feeding Debate

Nutrition is another area where pet parents often face undue pressure. There’s a prevalent belief that if you’re not feeding your dog a raw, homemade diet, you’re failing them. I understand the guilt that can come with these messages because I’ve felt it myself.

Years ago, I was feeding my nine dogs a raw diet. I was convinced this was the only way to be a responsible pet parent, but it became unmanageable. I spent countless hours sourcing, prepping, and storing food, to the point where my weekends were consumed by meal prep. Eventually, I realized this wasn’t sustainable, and I made the decision to switch to high-quality kibble with fresh food toppers.

It wasn’t an easy choice, and I hesitated to share it openly for fear of judgment. But my dogs continued to thrive, showing that there isn’t just one “right” way to care for them.

Holistic Care Without Extremes

I am a strong advocate for holistic care—using natural supplements, herbs, energy healing, and alternative therapies. However, I also recognize the value of traditional veterinary medicine. Unfortunately, even in holistic circles, there can be a judgmental attitude towards those who don’t adhere strictly to natural methods.

I had a client whose dog was suddenly very ill. While waiting to see a specialist, she consulted an osteopath, who blamed her dog’s condition on her stress and emotions. This practitioner went so far as to imply that the dog’s illness was her fault. This kind of guilt-inducing rhetoric is harmful and untrue. While our dogs can pick up on our emotions, suggesting that a person’s feelings can cause a dog to develop a serious illness is both misleading and damaging.

Finding Balance

The truth is, there is no single “right” way to care for your dog. Each pet parent is on their own journey, and each dog has its own unique energy, needs, and personality. I created the Soul-Led Dog Parenting Program to help pet parents learn about various aspects of care, from nutrition to energy healing, without feeling pressured or judged. The goal is to empower people to trust their intuition and build a relationship with their dogs based on compassion and understanding.

Feeding the Right Wolf

I’d like to share a passage that resonated deeply with me. It’s an old Cherokee story about two wolves inside us: one represents fear, while the other embodies faith. The wolf that wins is the one you feed. This simple story serves as a reminder that we have a choice—will we feed our fear, or will we nurture our faith, confidence, and excitement about our bond with our dogs?

Living Authentically With Your Dog

The most important message I want to convey is to live a life that is true to you and your dog. Don’t let societal pressures dictate your choices. Trust your intuition, and trust the bond you share with your pet. Your relationship is unique, and only you can know what’s best for your dog.

Conclusion

As we navigate the many facets of dog parenting, let’s commit to making choices that align with our values and circumstances, not out of fear of judgment. Let’s support one another in our journeys, offering compassion instead of criticism. Live authentically, trust yourself, and honor your dog’s individuality—because at the end of the day, that’s what truly matters.
